Apple self-driving car in minor crash

Image
A self-driving car owned by Apple was involved in an accident, California’s road authority has confirmed. The car, a modified Lexus RX450h with autonomous sensors, was rear-ended by a human driver in a Nissan Leaf. Humans were unhurt, but the machines suffered moderate damage. Apple’s car is understood to be part of an ambitious but secretive programme - Project Titan. Apple has not commented on the 24 August collision, understood to be the company's first. Speculation as to what the project seeks to achieve ranges from a fully-fledged Apple car - or just working with existing car makers to provide autonomous technology. Apple’s self-driving programme had been public knowledge, It was revealed that the company now has 66 such cars on the roads, with 111 drivers registered to operate them. My robot makes me feel like I haven't been forgotten

Internet-connected robots that can stream audio and video are increasingly helping housebound sick children and elderly people keep in touch with teachers, family and friends, combating the scourge of isolation and loneliness. Zoe Johnson, 16, hasn't been to school since she was 12. She went to the doctor in 2014 "with a bit of a sore throat", and "somehow that became A&E [accident and emergency]," says her mother, Rachel Johnson. The doctors diagnosed myalgic encephalomyelitis, ME for short, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - a debilitating illness affecting the nervous and immune systems. Zoe missed a lot of school but was able to continue with her studies with the help of an online tutor. But "over the years her real-world friendships disappeared because she's not well enough to see anybody," says Ms Johnson. For the last three months, though, she has been taking classes alongside her former classmates using a "te...

Lewis Hamilton took a thrilling and controversial victory in the Italian Grand Prix following a first-lap clash with title rival Sebastian Vettel. The Mercedes driver fought a cat-and-mouse battle with Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen throughout the race and eventually passed him around the outside of the first corner with nine laps to go. Hamilton and Mercedes not only dashed Ferrari's hopes of a home win after their first front-row lock-out at Monza for 18 years but also extended the Briton's championship lead over Vettel, who finished fourth, to 30 points. That is more than a clear win, with seven races and a total of 175 points remaining in the season. It could not have come at a better time for Hamilton, who is facing a fight against an apparently faster car - at least in qualifying - and with Mercedes' bogey track, Singapore, next on the schedule. Hamilton v Vettel Ferrari's race began to unravel within four corners of the start, as Vettel spu...

US Open 2018: Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova both knocked out in third round

Image
Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova were both knocked out of the US Open on Saturday, leaving defending champion Sloane Stephens as the sole remaining top-six seed in the women's draw. Wimbledon champion Kerber was beaten 3-6 6-3 6-3 by Slovak 29th seed Dominika Cibulkova in the third round. Two-time quarter-finalist Kvitova lost 7-5 6-1 to in-form Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka. None of this year's Grand Slam winners are now left in the women's singles. French Open champion Simona Halep was  knocked out by Kaia Kanepi  in the first round, while Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki experienced a  shock second-round loss to Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko. Kerber broke three times in the first set but Cibulkova repeated the feat in the second to take it to a decider. The German fourth seed, 30, was then broken again twice in the final set and misses out on a last-16 tie with last year's finalist  Madison Keys . American 14th seed Keys, runner-up to Steph...
